For many years, the CTIVD has been working closely with other international oversight bodies within the Intelligence Oversight Working Group (IOWG). The aim of the IOWG is to share best practices in oversight and to discuss current issues affecting each of the oversight bodies.
The CTIVD organized a meeting in The Hague in May this year. Over the course of two days various topics were discussed, including office automation and oversight in the grey zone.
International cooperation is important because the AIVD and MIVD also collaborate in many ways with the intelligence and security services of other countries. This cooperation is becoming more innovative and close. There is no legal basis for conducting joint oversight with supervisory authorities from other countries. However, regular contact between supervisory authorities does allow for the sharing of developments in legislation, supervision, business processes and lessons learnt. This strengthens the supervision of the services and contributes to the fulfilment of the CTIVD’s mission, namely safeguarding the balance between national security and the protection of fundamental rights.
